About Aatma Pooja

We all are aware of the “Advaita” Philosophy of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankara, who was very clear that the Jeevatma and Paramatma are the same and they are not different. This means that within us the pure and eternal Paramatma who is addressed as “Parabrahman“ who also is the creator of the world resides. So in short, nyasam is the process of invocation combining the Jeevatma and Paramatma together and placing the Devatas (gods) in our body at pre-designated places written in the Vedic scriptures so they can visualize sitting from our body the Vedic procedure we do.

Before starting any pooja we do “Aatma Pooja” which means Pooja for self which is explained in the shloka below which we chant before starting the Pooja.

“Dehodevalayaproktaha, jeeva deva sanatanah
Tyajetagyananirmalyamsohambhavenpoojayet”

देहो देवालयः प्रोक्तः जीवो देवस्सनातनः
त्यजेदज्ञाननिर्माल्यं सोऽहं भावेन पूजयेत्

These verses clearly state our body is a temple and the Jeeva in it is the God living in this temple.  So we start with salutations for the Jeevatma (the living God) within us which is a part of Parabrahman. The only thing many people don’t understand is this concept and keep their mind and body unclean by harboring negative qualities like Rajoguna/kroda(anger), Kama(desire), etc.

“Nyasam” word means ‘to place’ or ‘to offer seat’ or ‘invoke’.

Nyasam” was adapted as a part of Vedic rituals due to a strong logical background on the theory of Nyasam and its importance.

Nyasam can be of different types

Rishyadi (Rishi + aadi) Nyasam:   Every Vedic text has been visualized by a Rishi / Seer who had absorbed Vedic vibrations from the cosmos during the creation of the universe. Before starting to chant any part of Vedas or any mantras we should offer our respects to the Rishi/Seer who was instrumental in giving us these Vedic mantras. This is Rishi Nyasam.

Chanda Nyasam:    Second comes the Chandas or meter in which these Vedic slokas were visualized. Chandas means – how many syllables each sloka has. For example: Gayatri mantra has 24 syllables. So any Vedic verse with 24 syllables will be called Gayatri Chandas. Similarly, Ushnik Chandas has 28 syllables, Anustup Chandas has 32 syllables. Chandas are the prana shakti / life force of the mantra.

Devata Nyasam :     Thirdly we take the name of the Devata on whom the mantra is addressed. This is called Devata Nyasam.

Angha Nyasam + Kara Nyasam:  The installation of the Lord in the devotees own physical form. The ‘Installation in the Limbs’ and the ‘Installation in the Palm are technically called ‘Angha Nyasam and Kara Nyasam. This is a method by which the seeker sanctifies himself to be the Divine and installs various sacred deities in himself, willfully.

His neck is blue-black. He wears on His head and wears the snake as the Sacred thread

Vyaaghra charmot tariiyam – covers Himself with Tiger skin

He covers Himself with tiger-skin. He is praise worthy and grants solace and freedom from all fears.

He carries the pitcher and wears the garland made of beads. He has the trident in his hands, which represents the aspects of creation, sustenance and destruction

For this Great Mantra of Rudra –adhyaaya, the Seer is Aghora and metre is Anushtuph. His very form is the one that does good for all. The word ‘Namah Shivaya’ is the seed of this mantra. ‘Shivataraaya’ is the energy and ‘Mahaadevaaya’ is the pillar for this mantra.

The light of Rudra enveloped all the worlds from the lowest to the highest heaven.

He shines with the luster of pure crystalline linga and that of the full moon. He is immortal and unique.

We meditate on Rudra whose body pervades the whole cosmos. He is lustrous with the glow of snow. His body is covered with ash and He has poison in His throat. Snakes around his neck and His braided tuft is decorated with a crescent moon. He has the bow in His hands.
